Rob Ludlow
Management 3600
Section 01
October 18, 2000
1 Long Term Goals:a: Have 4 children (2010)
b: Own a 4 bedroom home (2010)
c: Have a Senior Management position (preferably VP) with a high tech company that has over 150 employees. (2015)
d: Put aside enough money to retire with at least a million dollars in income producing assets. (2035)
e: Be prepared to serve a mission with my wife for our church. (Specifics include: reading and memorizing scripture, saving enough money, living the specific standards of the church, & making sure each of our children are “out of the nest”.) 2035
2 Sub Goals for the week of October 9:

a: Try to make children at least once a day! Practice Practice Practice! ?
b: Setup an online bank account paying high interest, with a credit card (to establish credit) to save money for a home.
c: Get an A+++++ in my management class by getting an A on my midterm + this homework.
d: Find available real-estate to invest in.
e: Read scriptures with wife every night.

3 COMPLETE plan for goal “c: Senior Management position”

This & next week: Study at least 2.5 hours per class during the week to get an A on my Management, Econ, & Marketing midterms. Get an application for my Handspring Visor that will allow me to organize my classes, tests, & assignments.
One Month: Study at least 30 minutes per class hour to achieve a GPA of at least 3.8 for this semester.
6 Months: Have an exact plan of which classes to take and when in order to finish my degree within 2 years.
One Year: Get my resume up to date. Interview with 5 potential companies to get a feel for the industry and find what interests companies have in me, and vice versa. Begin networking with friends, family, etc. to get good job leads. Have my Bachelors Degree 75% complete with a GPA of at least 3.7.
2 Years: Complete my BA Degree with a total GPA of at least 3.7. Have a job lined up to begin within a month after school is over.
5 Years: Achieve and/or exceed at least 95% of company, organizational, & personal goals set at my current job. Seek out any individuals in the organization that may have ill feelings and resolve the problems and concerns. Read at least a book every month on how to become a more effective and efficient leader.

4 Activities for October 9, 2000

a: Looking at my sub-goals set in part 2 of this assignment, and comparing them with what I achieved looks good, but stands for more improvement. For example, I did find and setup an online bank account, but didn’t apply for a credit card. I was able to find some very good real-estate investment opportunities. Unfortunately I struggled with reading scriptures with my wife, and studying as effectively as I could for my exams. The reasons why I was not able to achieve all my sub-goals was because I am in the bad habit of watching TV, and not in the good habits I’ve decided to develop. It’s difficult for me to curb old habits and substitute new, more time-effective ones. I found I was much more able to achieve specific “task oriented” goals much more effectively. This is probably because I am somewhat of an “Achievement Junkie” and feel a great sense of accomplishment when I finish a task and move on to other things. In contrast, the more mundane and repetitive tasks are a bit more challenging.

b: The goals that I set were, from my perspective, excellent. I need to decide if it would be more effective to set more sub-goals in order to develop habits, or just keep “chugging along” with the goals I’ve already established. At this point I think I will stick with the habitual goals I’ve made, and develop more sub-goals in order to replace those that I’ve accomplished.

c: As I look back on the way I spent my time, I am a bit surprised and appalled. The first thing I noticed is how much time during these first few months of being married has been spent organizing, rearranging, sorting, combining, and re-organizing our lives and our “stuff” (financial and personal). After showing my weekly event log to my wife we were reminded that we are spending WAY too much time watching TV. We decided that even though we attempt to do things while watching TV, those things could be done much more quickly, effectively, and efficiently if we simply cut out much of our TV time.

In conclusion, after the experiences brought on from this assignment, my wife and I have decided to sit down every Sunday night for a “companionship inventory” to set goals and make plans. We expect this decision to make us increasingly more productive, effective, efficient, and happy.
When evaluating this assignment, please keep in mind that I got married only a month and a half ago, so much of my time is spent organizing my new life. Also, traveled to Pleasant Hill many times because I was responsible for taking care of my parents dog while they were on vacation.

  1. Wow, this article really brings me back. Reminds me of the ,um lets just say, {younger|earlier} days and the {problems|troubles} some in the family had. Not to worry though at this age any memory is a good memory I’m told. Great site and love the theme you have going here.
