The complete refillers guide to the PGI-9 cartridge made easy.

The NEW guide to the PGI-9’s cartridge made very easy.
The items needed.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_1.png
(1) Drilling and cutting.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_2.png

(2) Putting it all together.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_asemble_refiller.png

By following these four easy steps you now should have your own new freedom refiller.
-------------------------------------

Now the items needed for refilling.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_4.png
Please remember to reset the chip before you start to do your refilling.
First turn the cartridge for refilling upside down and place the original orange clip on the cartridge,
next place the cartridge on your scales and check it’s weight (new cartridge weighs 34gm. approx).

Now using this formula (1 gm. = 1 ml.) Subtract the weight of your empty cartridge from 34 gms.
and the amount left is the maximum amount of ink you can safely put back into your cartridge.

This is the added extra edited section to make the refilling so much easier than before.

Remove the orange shoe clip from the bottom of the cartridge and replace it with your newly constructed refiller.
Then take your syringe and attach it to your refiller while holding the syringe below the cartridge
pull back on the plunger gently till you feel some resistance then stop.
This removes all the air out of the cartridge.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_remove_air.png

Now if you don’t have a scales you can use the method described above to fill any of your cartridges at any time
by just removing the remaining ink and air left in your cartridge and then top-up or refill
the syringe again to 16 ml and reinject the ink back into the cartridge,
your cartridge is now full and ready for instant use.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_5.png

Now you’re ready to refill your cartridge.

Fill your syringe with the right amount of ink then attach it to your refiller, as before
I found it better to keep the cartridge below the syringe this time while GENTLY
pushing  down on the plunger to inject all of the ink into the cartridge.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_ink_filling.png
Next you slowly remove the syringe from your refiller, Then the refiller itself
just give the cartridge a little wipe and replace your original orange shoe clip.
That’s all there is too it  All done  EASY ! ! !  AND NO MESS.
So  Happy Refilling..
-----------------------------------------
Please Note
I would like to point out a clarification here of one big significant difference between the CLI-8 and PGI-9 cartridges during refilling,
and it’s only in relation to using The Freedom Refill Method for Canon CLI-8 cartridges
that it’s clearly understood that you NEVER push down on the plunger
but in fact hold it back so it doesn’t go in to fast during the entire refilling operation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information above does not relate to this refilling method.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_9.png

When refilling your cartridges there is no need to try and overfill them
and make a mess so long as it weighs more than 32 gm. it will be fine.

The preferred method I like to use is to replace a cartridge when showing low ink
rather than waiting for the printer to stop when it’s out of ink altogether.

Please remember that the resetter only works on eight of the cartridges and
you’ll have to make your own arrangements regarding the other two namely the (PBK and Grey).

There are three ways you can overcome this little problem by:-
Disabling the ink monitoring on these two particular cartridges only
or use a onetime chip and replace it every time you refill
and lastly you can use the ARC chip.

All three of these methods work and you’ll have to use one of them if you wish
to continue to print or you can  take the most expensive route by purchasing new OEM cartridges each time,
but that takes the fun out of having this printer altogether.
-----------------------------
http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_sample_10.png

The washer is not really need for anything other than to act as a reservoir
around the needle to hold the adhesive till it sets and goes hard that’s all.
You can use a plastic, rubber or a paper washer if you don’t have a one big enough and or don’t use one at all.

http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/uploads/5128_refiller_9.png

I have tried to explain it all in as much detail and illustrated pictures as I can on how to construct this little refiller,
so it shouldn’t pose to much a problem for most DIY guys.
These little refiller’s work perfectly for me so they should work for anybody who wishes to make them.
a quick video is available on this refiller :-   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnaWgfQDMJQ

Re: The complete refillers guide to the PGI-9 cartridge made easy.

Considering Mikeling's method of simply dripping ink into that cartridge, would it be possible to modify your method so that you just connect the syringe to the cartridge without a needle, place it at a certain angle slightly above the cartridge so that by simple gravity ink will be forced into the cartridge and stop when it is filled at a certain level ?

Re: The complete refillers guide to the PGI-9 cartridge made easy.

Great job and photo tutorial on re-filling the PGI-9 cartridges.

I just successfully refilled my 1st PGI-9 carts in this case using the simple drip or dribble method. I had printed quite a few B&W prints so my Gray ink became low. I have the IS inks from Precisioncolors and a small accurate gram scale.  Of course I cannot reset this cart but I proceeded to refill it anyway.

Placed it upside down on the zeroed scale and dribbled the ink directly onto the oval sponge outlet. It absorbed the ink,,,well,, like a sponge. Really! I was actually providing a steady stream from the 10 ml syringe and 20 gauge blunt needle. When I hit around 32.7 grams I stopped and squeezed the sides of the cart till the outlet sponge became saturated by the ink I squeezed out. Letting go of the sides allowed the ink to flow back in. No air bubbles were detected.
I then added a few more drops till no more could be absorbed. I flipped the cart over and blotted the outlet on paper towels. After a couple of pats the cart did not leak out any ink at all. I re-installed it and ran a perfect nozzle check. It is still reading low but I'll wait till I receive some single use chips and then I'll swap the chips.

I think I will shoot a video of a complete refill and reset and upload it to youtube

Re: The complete refillers guide to the PGI-9 cartridge made easy.

Then there is also the Canadian Jig that uses just a push pin and a shortened needle or a normal needle with a sleeve to act as a depth stop.
From all the attempts I did, I concluded that the finish step with the dribble, flood and squeeze for the last 1 ml or so ensures that it is full with no mess. Each time I try to make it to the end without the dribble, I get a little mess. But that's me.
