canon printer quality comparing (old/new) ? - plan forward

looking for comments re canon printer quality comparing (old/new):

"All-In-One" models:

- older PGI5/CLI8 printers, ie MP830, MX850
- new PGI220/CLI221 printers, ie MX860, MX870

i realize the new cartridges are smaller, more opaque, are refillable using the german method, also re setters are available.

have heard the quality of the new printers are not as good, cheaper parts, etc.

was wondering if anyone has compared them side by side.

trying to develop a plan forward if/when my backup stock of older style printers get exhausted.

thx

J

If the PGI5/CLI8 are "older" then the BCI3/BCI6 are "oldest" and what I would recommend since they are still available on the used market and are much easier to deal with in terms of refilling because the cartridges do not have chips in them and they have a very reliable ink monitoring system.

I did purchase some "older" MX700 printers (like you have) but found that you cannot use the internal paper source as the paper will jam. Others have reported this problem too. They also do not have duplex capability. But they print just fine from the rear paper source, just as well as the "oldest" printers.

Canon MX700, MP760, MP780, iP4000, iP4000R, iP6000D, i9100, i860 printers.
I used to vacuum fill Canon cartridges with Inktec ink but I have converted to the German method. It's so much quicker, easier and cleaner.

funny, re the "oldest", vs "older", vs new cartridges.

thx, i did not know about the MX700 paper jams.  not good news, since they may not be reliable backup printers,  arghh......

Do you use your MX700? Have you tried it with paper coming from below?

But it is very reliable if you use the paper source in the back of the printer.

MX700s not opened yet, still boxed with styrofoam removed.  good news that the rear paper feed works fine.

that $59 deal for a refurbished MX700 last year was a good one, close to the cost of just the cartridges and print head.

now seeing new MX700's range from $300 - $500 on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/ … dition=new

will only get worse once the new opaque carts arrive
